Jaipur, the Pink City

Each morning and evening we are greeted with "namaste."
 Along a street in Jaipur
Camels on the side of the street

The five-storied Hawa Mahal is in center city Jaipur and is uniquely designed. The city is called the Pink City because of the pink color of the sandstone buildings.
We are welcomed at St. Xavier's School, a Jesuit college with majors such as cosmetology, sewing, economics, and other business applications. This is the first year for the school. They have a K-12 program at another location.

I visited with these three girls who are majoring in economics. They live nearby and commute daily.
Cosmetology takes on a new meaning in India. This girl models the fine work of her classmates.
A sewing class. These students are comfortable to sit on the floor while they sew.
Jaipur has many arches like this one, a distinctive for the city.
We saw the fine art of preparing gems for jewelry from the raw material at Bhandari Jewellers in Jaipur.

We also saw the art of block printing on fabric. To get numerous colors in the print calls for overlay of the block. It needs to be carefully done so that the final product is well done.

Below: The fabric is then dipped in the salt water solution to set the colors permanenty. This elephant required four blockings to get the four colors. The elephant represents good luck in Indian culture.
